As national budgeting ranges, forestry mulching typically costs about $400 to $800 per acre, and up to about $2,000 per acre for dense growth. Hourly rates run about $125 to $300 per machine hour with an operator, with job minimums of about $400 to $600. Flatwood Land Clearing Palm Bay provides forestry mulching across Palm Bay and south Brevard, where thick saw palmetto and summer-wet ground often push a tract toward the upper end.
In short
- Per acre: about $400 to $800 typical, up to about $2,000 for dense growth, as national budgeting ranges.
- Per machine hour with an operator: about $125 to $300. Day rates: about $1,000 to $2,500.
- Job minimums run about $400 to $600, and mobilization fees of about $150 to $300 apply where charged.
- Mulching leaves stumps and roots in the ground, which is why it costs less than clearing and grubbing, and why palmetto grows back.
- In Palm Bay, mulching underbrush in place is a grubbing method under the city code, with its own permit rules.
How mulching is priced: acre, hour or day
A forestry mulcher is a rotating drum of teeth on a skid steer, compact track loader or tractor that grinds standing brush and small trees where they stand. Because the work is one machine and one operator, quotes come in three units.
| Unit | National budgeting range | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Per acre | $400-$800 typical, up to about $2,000 for dense growth | Even growth where time per acre is predictable |
| Per machine hour, with operator | $125-$300 | Patchy or mixed ground, small or irregular areas |
| Per day | $1,000-$2,500 | Multi-day jobs on larger tracts |
| Job minimum | $400-$600 | Small jobs: a fence line, a trail, a patch of palmetto |
| Mobilization, where charged | $150-$300 | Trailering the machine to the site |
These are national ranges, not quotes and not company rates. The wide per-acre range is real: light brush under open pines goes quickly, while a closed thicket of palmetto, pepper and saplings can take several times as long per acre. Hourly and per-acre quotes for the same ground should land near each other once the hours per acre are known.
What moves the price on Florida ground
| Driver | Why it matters | Effect on price |
|---|---|---|
| Vegetation density | A continuous understory takes more passes per acre than scattered brush | The biggest single driver of hours per acre |
| Stem diameter | Saplings shred quickly; larger trees take far longer or need felling first | Trees beyond what the head handles add saw work |
| Saw palmetto | The fans mulch easily, but the trunks along the ground are tough and the head is run low over them | More time per acre, and the trunks still resprout |
| Brazilian pepper | Dense, multi-stemmed thickets with heavy wood at the base | Slow going, and follow-up treatment to stop resprouting |
| Wet ground | Flatwoods soils hold water about a foot down from June to November | Soft ground slows or stops machines in summer |
| Keepers and root zones | Working around kept trees, with hand clearing inside protected root zones on Palm Bay lots | Slower passes near trees |
| Gopher tortoise burrows | No work within 25 feet of a burrow without an FWC permit | Areas left out or an added permit step |
| Mulch depth wanted | A thin layer for sod or trails needs extra passes or raking | More time, or a separate raking step |
| Access and shape | Narrow gates, canals, small irregular areas | More time per acre, or a minimum charge |
Palmetto deserves its own note because it decides most mulching jobs here. Mulching takes off the fans and shreds what is above ground, but the trunks that run along and just under the sand carry buds and resprout. A mulched palmetto patch is usually green again within a season. That is fine where the goal is access, a firebreak or a buffer that will be mowed. Where palmetto must not come back, the trunks need grubbing or root raking, which is a different job priced under clearing and grubbing.
What’s inside a forestry mulching price
| Part of the price | What sets it | Local figure or source |
|---|---|---|
| Machine and operator time | Hours on site, from density, stem size and wet ground | Construction equipment operators in the Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville metro earn a mean $24.84 an hour vs $31.87 nationally (BLS) |
| Ground labor | Saw work on stems too big for the head, hand clearing inside root zones | Tree trimmers earn a mean $21.48 locally vs $26.91 nationally; landscaping workers $18.50 vs $20.33 (BLS) |
| Mobilization | Trailering the mulcher to and from the site | Heavy truck drivers earn a mean $24.30 locally vs $28.71 nationally (BLS) |
| Disposal | Normally none: the mulch stays on the ground | No haul-off unless the quote includes raking and removal |
| Permit | Who governs the land and how much is mulched | Palm Bay grubbing permit, where required, per the city’s current fee schedule; unincorporated Brevard’s small-scale permit is $240 |
| Follow-up treatment | Pepper and palmetto regrowth after mulching | No public figure; scope to check, with UF/IFAS Extension guidance for pepper control |
The missing disposal line is the main reason mulching costs less than other clearing. A wage is not a billing rate, since the hourly rate also carries the machine, fuel, transport, insurance, licensing and overhead, and a mulching machine is a large part of that. Local operator wages run about 22 percent below the national mean according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, so a high mulching quote on Palm Bay ground reflects density and stem size more than local pay.

Permits for mulching in Palm Bay and Brevard
Palm Bay’s tree code names mulching in place as one of the methods of grubbing, the city’s term for removing underbrush without scraping, filling or taking out protected trees. A grubbing permit is required except on one- and two-family sites under an acre, on agricultural or grazing land, and for any grubbing area of a quarter acre or less. Mulching that takes down trees of 6 inches or more is tree removal, which needs the city’s tree removal permit. Grubbing without a required permit brings a new application at double the fee and, where restoration is not feasible, a specimen tree mitigation fee for each quarter acre grubbed.
On unincorporated county land, Brevard’s $240 small-scale land clearing permit allows up to half the understory or one acre, whichever is less, and up to 10 percent of the native canopy. The Brevard permit guide covers both, and towns such as Malabar set their own rules.
Illustrative budgets
These examples are illustrative, built only from the ranges above. They are not quotes or past jobs.
Three acres of moderate palmetto under pines, opened for walking and a firebreak. Pines kept, palmetto and brush mulched. At $400 to $800 per acre, about $1,200 to $2,400; if the palmetto is dense enough to price near $2,000 per acre, up to about $6,000. Expect palmetto regrowth within a season and plan to mow it.
A 200-foot fence line overgrown with pepper and vines. A narrow strip that takes a few machine hours. At $125 to $300 an hour it may land at or near the $400 to $600 job minimum, plus mobilization where charged, plus follow-up treatment of the pepper stumps.
Ten acres of mixed pasture edge and scrub over three days. At a day rate of $1,000 to $2,500, about $3,000 to $7,500 for the machine time, before mobilization and any permit.
What a mulching quote usually leaves out
- Stump grinding or grubbing where stumps or roots must come out; see the stump grinding cost guide
- Herbicide treatment of Brazilian pepper and other resprouting invasives
- Raking or removing the mulch layer before sod or seed
- Felling and removing trees too large for the mulching head
- Erosion control on bare or thinly covered sand
Mulching is not a pad finish. The mulch layer and roots left in the ground decay under fill or a slab, so a house site on mulched ground still needs the building areas grubbed. The forestry mulching vs land clearing guide sets out where each finish fits, forestry mulching vs bush hogging covers lighter maintenance, and the per-acre clearing cost guide compares mulching with full clearing.
