Forestry mulching vs bush hogging: what is the difference?

A bush hog keeps open ground open. A forestry mulcher takes back ground that has closed in. Using one for the other's job is where most of the frustration starts.

Flatwood Land Clearing Palm Bay handles brush clearing and forestry mulching on lots and acreage around Palm Bay, and the difference between the two machines is simple: a bush hog mows grass, weeds and light brush on ground that is already open, while a forestry mulcher grinds dense brush, vines and small trees on ground that has closed in. Mulch once to reclaim; mow after to keep.

The rest of this guide explains what each machine actually does to Florida flatwoods growth, why palmetto defeats both, and how to plan the two together.

In short

  • A bush hog is a rotary cutter pulled behind a tractor. It is a maintenance tool for open ground.
  • A forestry mulcher is a toothed drum on a skid steer, track loader or excavator. It is a reclamation tool for overgrown ground.
  • Neither removes roots. Saw palmetto, Brazilian pepper and saplings resprout after both.
  • The usual plan on overgrown acreage is one mulching pass, then regular mowing before regrowth turns woody.

What a bush hog does

“Bush hog” has become the general name for a rotary cutter: a deck with heavy swinging blades, driven by a tractor’s power take-off and pulled across a field. It cuts grass, weeds and brush, throws the clippings out behind it and leaves stubble. It is the right tool for pasture, a cleared lot that needs keeping down, a fence line that is already open, or the back of a property mowed a few times a year.

Its limits come from the same design. The blades swing and the deck rides over what it cannot cut, so thick woody stems, stumps and dense saplings either stall it or bend and dull the blades. A compact tractor running one has limited weight and power to push into a thicket. Owners with a few acres of palmetto and pepper ask on tractor forums what size compact tractor would make the ground mowable, and the honest answer is that the first pass is rarely a mowing job at all.

What a forestry mulcher does

A forestry mulcher replaces the swinging blades with a drum of fixed teeth that spins at high speed and is pushed into standing growth. Mounted on a skid steer, a compact track loader or an excavator arm, it grinds brush, vines, saplings and small trees where they stand and drops the shredded wood as a mulch layer. It reaches growth a mower cannot, works into thickets rather than over them, and leaves stumps cut at or just below the surface.

That makes it the tool for an overgrown lot, a closed-in pasture, a fence line swallowed by pepper or a buffer that needs opening under kept trees. It is not a grubbing tool. Roots stay in the ground, which is fine for land that will be mowed and wrong for land that will be built on; forestry mulching vs land clearing explains that line.

Palmetto: the plant that beats both

Saw palmetto is the reason Florida owners end up comparing these two machines. Its trunks creep along the ground and just under the sand, and buds along them resprout after the fans are cut. A bush hog shreds the fans and the exposed tops. A forestry mulcher goes a little lower and processes the trunks it can reach. Neither pulls out the buried trunk and root mass, so both leave palmetto that comes back.

On a pasture or a back lot, that can be acceptable: mulch the stand once, then keep mowing so the regrowth never gets tall. One owner on a central Florida forum described a field mulched years earlier whose palmetto roots still caught a plow, which is what happens when the plan stops after the first pass. Where palmetto has to be gone for good, under a lawn, a pad or a garden, saw palmetto clearing means raking or grubbing the trunks out of the sand.

Brazilian pepper and saplings

Brazilian pepper is on Florida’s noxious weed list and resprouts from cut stumps and from its roots. Mowing it repeatedly keeps it short; mulching a thicket clears it to the ground for a season. Neither kills it. Removal means getting the root crown out, or treating cut stumps following UF/IFAS Extension guidance, before the land goes on a mowing schedule. Pine saplings are easier, since a cut pine does not resprout from its stump, so regular mowing keeps them from coming back.

Wet ground and timing

Palm Bay’s flatwoods sands hold a high water table. In EauGallie sand, the most common soil in the city, the wet layer sits about 12 inches down from June through November and falls to about four feet by April and May. Both machines are heavier on soft ground than they look. A tractor and cutter rut wet pasture; a tracked mulcher spreads its weight better but can still churn saturated sand. The drier months give firmer ground for either. The best time to clear land guide covers the seasons.

Cost and effort

As a national budgeting range, forestry mulching runs about $125 to $300 a machine hour with an operator, or about $400 to $800 an acre in typical growth and up to about $2,000 an acre in dense growth, with job minimums of about $400 to $600. Bush hogging has no published range here; it is priced by acreage, height and density of growth, access and how often it is done.

The cost question is really a frequency question. Paying for a mulching pass on land that a mower could have kept open is money spent twice. Letting regrowth harden past what a mower can cut means paying for mulching again. The forestry mulching cost guide has the full breakdown.

Question Bush hog (rotary cutter) Forestry mulcher
Carrier Tractor, by power take-off Skid steer, track loader or excavator
Handles Grass, weeds, light brush Dense brush, vines, saplings, small trees
Leaves Stubble and clippings Mulch layer, stumps cut low
Roots Stay Stay
Best use Keeping open ground open Reclaiming overgrown ground

Safety around both machines

Both machines throw debris. A rotary cutter flings sticks and stones out from under the deck, and a mulching head can throw wood chips and rocks well beyond the work area. People, pets and vehicles stay well clear while either one runs, and no one walks up to a machine that is moving. If you plan to run the mower yourself, the clear it yourself or hire guide covers where owner work makes sense. Once the land is open, what to do after land clearing sets out how to keep it that way.

Overgrown, or just due for a mow?

Send the acreage, what has grown up and how long since it was last cut, with a few phone photos. The scope says whether it needs a mulcher once or a mower on a schedule.

Notes

Three more questions

Can a bush hog cut saw palmetto?

It can knock the fronds down and shred the exposed tops, and on a field that is mowed regularly that keeps palmetto low. It does not touch the trunks lying in and just under the sand, so the plants come back. A heavy, established palmetto stand is hard on a rotary cutter and the tractor running it.

What can a forestry mulcher cut that a bush hog cannot?

Woody growth. A mulching head on a skid steer, track loader or excavator grinds saplings, small trees, vines and dense brush where they stand. A rotary cutter is built for grass, weeds and light brush, and thick woody stems beyond its rating stall it or damage it.

How often should cleared acreage be bush hogged?

Often enough that nothing gets woody. Once saplings and pepper shoots harden into stems, the mower struggles and the land is heading back toward a mulching job. In Florida that usually means more cuts through the wet summer growing months than in the drier winter.
